About St. Jude’s
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN was founded in 1962 by entertainer Danny Thomas for the purpose of treating and finding cures for children’s cancer. When St. Jude opened its doors, childhood cancer was a virtual death sentence. Only 20 percent of children survived, and only 4 percent of children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, won their fight. The research and treatment developed by St. Jude have helped push today’s overall survival rate for childhood cancers to 80 per cent, and the survival rate for ALL is now 94 percent.
Country Cares for St. Jude kids is one of the most successful radio fundraising events in America. Since the program began in 1989, nearly 200 radio stations across the country have participated and raised $550 million in pledges for the children of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
